Vashon Garage

This AIA Honor Award-winning garage remodel, designed by Graypants, was just as much a deconstruction project as it was construction. The results transformed a loved and timeworn garage into a simple, multi-use cabin, combining aged materials with steel and glass. Our team preserved the original fir framing and then milled it into wood flooring pallets. The wood ceiling structure was built with reclaimed boards that came from the demolition of the old downtown Goodwill building. An industrial-grade garage door made by an aircraft carrier door manufacturer was welded into place to open the building to the salt air. Oversized, one-half-inch thick glass slabs were hoisted by crane over the building and then secured into the bi-fold door. Strong collaboration and innovation were key factors in pulling off this Graypants debut design.
