Hale Lana

Hale Lana is a 12,500-square-foot house, designed by Olson Kundig, located in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Hale Lana means ‘floating home’ in Hawaiian and the feature design is a huge 30’ cantilevered roof that floats over the outdoor living room. The adjustable truss system engineered specifically for this cantilever is completely concealed inside the corrugated copper roof. Built as a series of modern, Hawaiian huts around the natural lava flows on site, the buildings are all connected by lanais that appear to float just off the ground. Using a limited material palette of clear cedar siding, floor-to-ceiling glass, and lava rock walls, all built on tight modules, continues the theme.
