Designed by Tom Kundig, Sol Duc Cabin is a compact, highly resilient retreat located in the temperate rainforest of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. Perched on steel stilts above the floodplain of the Sol Duc River, this off-grid cabin is engineered to withstand the extreme weather conditions of the Pacific Northwest while providing a seamless connection to nature.
The 350-square-foot cabin is defined by its simple, box-like structure and robust materials, including corten steel cladding that develops a protective patina over time, ensuring durability and low maintenance. The design incorporates Kundig’s signature kinetic elements—large steel shutters, operated by a hand-cranked mechanical system, secure the cabin when unoccupied and open to reveal expansive glass walls that frame views of the surrounding forest and river.
Inside the cabin, the compact yet functional space features warm wood finishes, built-in furnishings, and a flexible layout that maximizes efficiency. The cabin operates independently of public utilities, utilizing rainwater collection and off-grid power solutions to support a sustainable, self-sufficient lifestyle.
