Ward Street Residence
Ward Street Residence, designed by Brandt Hollinger and Garrett Cord Werner, challenged us to preserve and modernize a small, time-worn 1920s Mediterranian-style house on a steep, exposed site high above downtown Seattle.
The 2,600-square-foot home was completely gutted and redesigned to provide an open floor plan that celebrated the views of the city skyline and Puget Sound. Large new windows and sliding doors were punched into the old brick structure, adding a contemporary flavor to the historical exterior. Interior finishes include boardform concrete fireplaces, cedar ceilings, blackened steel stairs and shelving, walnut flooring, furniture, and cabinetry.
Bruce Hinckley of Alchemie Design completely redesigned and replanted the landscape, utilizing ivy-laced rockery, ornamental pines, dramatic water features, and reflecting ponds. The sound of water helps drown out city noise and provides an oasis-like tranquility.
