Fort Greene

Originally built in 1873, this Fort Greene brownstone is located within a landmark district in Brooklyn. Our scope of work included a full gut renovation and a complete historic façade restoration. Previous remodels had partitioned the building into outdated, dark apartments. The clients partnered with long-time friend and architect Oliver Freundlich to reimagine the building as a 5,500-square-foot single-family home.

To draw in natural light and illuminate the core of the house, Oliver and his team at OF/D designed a 12-foot-long capsule-shaped skylight for the roof, set above a winding, sculptural staircase that connects all five floors. Zepsa Industries of Charlotte, North Carolina, partnered with us on the fabrication and installation of the staircase, remaining steadfast through COVID and beyond. Their combination of new-world digital modeling and old-world craftsmanship proved indispensable. Ivory Build worked with us on the white oak millwork throughout and was instrumental in cladding and perfecting the staircase. Craftwork Concepts handled the complex framing of the sheetrock surfaces that cover the undersides of the stair flights as they rise through the building.

The renovation also included a redesign of the rear facade, which features new large windows and sliding doors and a new glass and steel deck at the parlor level. Emily Lindberg led the interiors, which feature practical, unfussy storage solutions and colorful, hard-wearing furniture and finishes, making the space both functional and visually appealing for the young family.
